Rebecca Black came out as queer!
FEATURE: Singer Rebecca Black has come out as queer during a guest spot on a recent podcast episode.
Pop singer Rebecca Black was the featured guest on the April 3rd episode of Dating Straight, an LGBTQUIA+ dating advice podcast and YouTube show. She spoke to show hosts Amy Ordman and Jack Dodge about her recent breakup with another woman – before clarifying that she identifies as queer.
To date, Rebecca is best known for the viral-for-all-the-wrong-reasons track “Friday”, but that’s a real shame. In the near-decade since that song’s release, she’s shown incredible growth both personally and artistically.
Rebecca has never been shy about her personal life, speaking out many times about the bullying she faced online after the release and spread of “Friday”. But only now has she decided to publicly come out.
“I’ve dated a lot of different types of people,” she said on the podcast. “I don’t really know what the future holds. Some days I feel a little more on the gay side than others.”
Rebecca’s comments will certainly resonate with lots of LGBTQIA+ community members who find their personal sexuality to be more fluid than traditional identifiers allow for. For many of these individuals, the term “queer” helps to identify them as a member of the LGBTQIA+ family, without restricting their sexual or romantic experiences to simply gay, straight, or bisexual.
In the years since “Friday” took off on YouTube, Rebecca has released a fairly steady string of solid pop songs that display a pretty voice and an ear for catchy songwriting. On March 13th, she released a double single for tracks “Self Sabotage” and “Closer”. Both are earwormy, if safe, tracks that clearly show the potential Rebecca has to be a real force in pop music in the coming years.
Moving forward, Rebecca stands to be more than just a pop star – but also an example to many of what a successful queer woman looks like. We at CHORD are very excited to see Rebecca so boldly and proudly expressing her truth, and we know that she will be an inspiration to many who feel the same way.
